Abbey Road Studios Amplify 2023
Abbey Road Studios' special annual Amplify event will take place on November 10th and 11th, with this year being live streamed online too!
Abbey Road will once again open their doors to the next generation of artists, engineers, and creatives for
free. This year's event features masterclasses, interactive sessions, workshops, A&R demo feedback sessions, and Q&As. Some of the music industry's leading names
will be in
attendance, plus there are special panelists and hosts to share career insights and essential advice for upcoming talent. This may
include educating musical artists to own their master tapes, and only license them to
record labels, distributors, etc. With the recent debacle of Taylor Swift having to re-record her albums, there is no time like the present to ensure your future is truly yours, and not owned by typical music business contracts.
This is especially important if you are a young artist, composer, producer, creative, or simply looking to navigate the
treacherous music industry. Rest assured the A&R Feedback Sessions may be an
eye-opener to the realities of the music business. There is planned a series of fast-paced and focused 1-2-1 sessions where young artists will have the opportunity to present their music,
though be aware of what rights you may be giving up as advice is given as you as
you "receive
personalized advice on how to refine their sound, develop their brand, and capture the attention of industry professionals with A&Rs from Decca, Polydor, EMI, Ninja Tune and Because Music." New for 2023 is Mastering the Spotlight: A Workshop in Press & Media for Artists, a series of practical workshops designed to empower and equip artists with the confidence, practical knowledge and skills required to generate valuable media coverage for their work. This may include knowing your rights in owning the music you create, and how to protect yourself from the
pitfalls of the music business, which even the brilliant Taylor Swift has learned the hard way. So ensure your
knowledge of your rights to your music, and always own your master tapes.

Toronto Audiofest 2023 Show Report Part 2... The Third Floor
Show Report By Rick Becker Dropping down to the
3rd Floor on the elevators to keep the flow in ascending room numbers, I jogged
to the right beginning in Room 321. Only two of the three elevators were
operational during the show, which was sufficient as the wait was never long
throughout the weekend. There was a conglomeration of respected brands in the room of this retailer from
Winnipeg, Manitoba. That's Leonid Yamborko riding herd on a Lumin streamer
with Youn Sun Nah doing a very nice cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"
with the signal sent to the DAC in an Aesthetics Janus CD player. A pair of
ModWright KWA 99 monoblocks ($9000) were driving either the Audio Physics Midex
($12,649) floorstanders from Germany or the Elipson Legacy 3210 monitors ($4781)
from France with an AMT tweeter and a ceramic coated aluminum woofer. ---> Toronto Audiofest 2023 Show Report Part 2.

Toronto Audiofest 2023 Show Report Part 1... The Fourth Floor
Show Report By Rick Becker Driving up to
Toronto on 4.5 hours of sleep on Saturday morning, the Check Tire Pressure'
warning light came on. I cruised into the Airport Westin at 10 a.m. and affixed
my bright orange Enjoy the Music.com lanyard to my Press Pass. True to
form, I started at the top on the Fourth Floor. The crowd was, shall we say,
thin. Stepping out of the elevator and turning left, I stumbled into 426 with Artist
Cloner, one of my favorite Canadian manufacturers. He was originally to be in
346 so I was lucky to be greeted by his lovely wife. The signage at the ceiling
of each active room was excellent. And stickers on the carpet kept people from
wandering down irrelevant hallways. ---> Toronto Audiofest 2023 Show Report Part 1.

Listen To What
You Like Roger makes a shocking suggestion.
Article
By Roger Skoff Do
you remember the Knights Templar? Or the story of King Arthur and the search for
the Holy Grail? In Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, they actually
found it, and to everyone's surprise, it turned out not to be some
jewel-encrusted chalice, designed and fit for the use of kings or better, but
the simple clay vessel of a carpenter or a man of the people. As portrayed in the movie, the significance of
the Grail lay not in what it was made of, but in the way that it was regarded by
those who beheld it. Perhaps surprisingly, there's a fairly good parallel to
that in High-End audio. Our Holy Grail the thing so many of us have
always sought has always been (at least after Harry Pearson first described
it as such ) "the absolute sound": a perfect reproduction of the experience of
hearing live music played in person. That was my hope for years, too, and it's been
the goal of most of the audiophiles I've known, ever since I first got into this
hobby.... ---> Listen To What You Like.
STEREO
Sound Education Sessions In America Crazy idea becomes a big hit at an American high school.
Report By Matthias B๖de Teaching young people about hi-fi, its possibilities and its potential for
fascination is Matthias B๖de's favorite subject and a matter close to his
heart. In 2019, for example, our "Mr. Workshop" utilized the
connection between PREMIUM PARTNER Reiner Kemper in Ulm and the local technical
high school to give senior students an insight into high-quality music
reproduction, taking into account their personal interests. For the teenagers,
it was a school trip into the hi-fi field that was as unusual as it was
delightful, and which found its way into (German) STEREO issue 3/2020 as
a workshop. Benjamin Rehberg, hi-fi enthusiast and STEREO reader
living in New York, also read the article and was impressed by its approach. --->

"For the past five years, the audio industry has witnessed a tectonic shift in the platforms for digital signal processing available to developers of audio products. Now, we are seeing another significant evolution as the industry migrates to extremely sophisticated use cases of edge AI and on-device resources. All the while, users' expectations of audio features continue to increase. Voice recognition and voice engines were one of the biggest incentives for manufacturers to boost the processing power of built-in DSP and audio systems. Voice applications required embedded signal processing to ensure that voice signals that originated in even the most unpredictable conditions and captured by microphones could be clearly recognized." ---> audioXpress' November 2023

Aavik Acoustics RIAA R-180 Phono
Preamplifier Review Excellent transparency and musicality deliver musical bliss. Review By Tom Lyle In July of
2021, I reviewed Aavik Acoustics's
I-180 integrated amplifier, D-180 DAC, and S-180 streamer / network player. In the review, I practically raved about
the sonic quality of all three components, so it was no surprise that Aavik earned
a hard-fought Enjoy
the Music.com 2021 Blue Note Award within
our
September 2021 issue. The three Aavik components bestowed a 2021 Blue Note award are
not cheap, but neither are they extravagantly priced at $7200 each. That is
certainly reasonable for high-end audio components that I thought were some of
the best I've ever heard within and above their price range. Not only that, but
these three components took a surprisingly noticeable step up in their sonic
performance when used together. I'm willing to admit that their good looks might have
initially contributed to me liking them, especially when the three components
were stacked on top of each other - an Aavik stack. --->

Audeze LCD-5 Flagship Headphones Review As good as it gets! Review By Gary Alan Barker I have been a big fan of
Audeze's headphones throughout the years. Since their initial release of the venerable LCD-2 over a decade ago, Audeze has become a world leader in planar magnetic technology and has produced some of the very best headphones on the planet. Well, never to let the grass grow under their feet, the engineers at Audeze have certainly been quite busy this past year with three significant new releases: LCD-R (ribbon-based headphones, and CRBN Electrostatic (their first foray into electro-static headphones), the
LCD-5's round out this amazing trifecta of great new products. The original LCD-2's wowed the world of personal audio with truly some of the best performing headphones ever released a decade ago. Their relaxed and natural tone was a stark contrast to the many brighter sounding headphones previously released like the AKG K701,
Beyerdynamic T1 and Sennheiser HD800. --->

STEREO Magazine Celebrates 50 Year Anniversary STEREO pops the corks as they celebrating their very special 50th birthday! Immerse yourself in five decades of hi-fi history, the development of technology, music, the market, the hi-fi community, and
STEREO's incredible editorial team. The year is 1973 half a century ago, and yet almost another age. Telephone calls are corded and analog, we wrote articles on a typewriter, a litre of petrol costs 50 pfennigs, and the
STEREO booklet was four marks.
The hi-fi wave arrived from Great Britain, and the first systems made of individual components are replacing the living room radios of the 1960s. There were turntables, amplifiers or receivers, and separate boxes for left and right
channels as stereo was new. In addition, a tape recorder provided the opportunity
to copy LPs that you borrowed from friends. Perhaps you record music from the Am / FM radio via rotor antenna. Whatever the case,
STEREO invites you to join them in celebrating their fantastic 50th
anniversary within a very special issue at this link.

AES NY 2023 155th Convention
The Audio Engineering Society (AES), designed to inspire, educate and promote the technology and practice of audio, will be held at the Javits Convention Center in NYC from October 25th through 27th. During the past 75 years, the AES has evolved from a small group of engineers interested in radio and sound to today being major influence in the audio world. This influence encompasses musical artists, music educators, audio manufacturers, and innovators. Join the AES's members as they explore the rich history,
while also examining their past journey. The future direction of audio can be experienced at the
AES NY 2023 convention. For example, you can join Dolby for the Dolby Atmos music experience at their NY 88 screening room with Dolby Atmos music in cinema, smart speaker, and auto sound, plus there will be a discussion and Q&A session.
You can also join hip-hop personalities as they celebrate the 50th anniversary on this music
genera. Over the course of its history, hip-hop has pushed the audio envelope with new sounds and new ways to create them. Using turntables, samplers, sequencers, and modern day software, hip-hop producers and engineers across eras have shaped the sound of modern music by using other's music in sample form to create their songs. A panel featuring multi-platinum and
Grammy Award-winning producers and engineers will discuss their unique methods of sound creation and sampling.

Within this month's editorial, Alan Sircom says
"The Right to Repair is something audio magazines rarely consider, but automatically factor into reviews. But, in recent years, it has become an increasingly important issue in the longevity of good audio. Let's get the easy part out of the way first; the need to discuss a Right to Repair doesn't apply when it comes to most turntables and loudspeakers. Products that are primarily exercises in engineering as opposed to electronic engineering have an ability to be repaired baked into their construction and design. Put simply, if you blow up a drive unit on a loudspeaker, you get a new drive unit! The same doesn't hold true all the time with electronics today. Outside of audio, we moved from a 'repair' culture to a 'disposable' society. If you go through 'that drawer' of tech, you'll likely find several phones in various state of
function. See

Rogue Audio Pharaoh II Integrated
Amplifier Review A new King is crowned!
Review By Ric Mancuso Rogue Audio
has once again upped the ante with their Pharaoh II hybrid integrated amp. I'm
always a bit wary of the 'New & Improved' versions of any products that
come to market. I seem to gravitate to original models (brands) of most premium
products. Why do you ask? Well, because Herculean engineering efforts usually go
into the development and production of a groundbreaking design. The Pharaoh I
was launched in 2013, nearly ten years ago! It has been my reference amp for
years. I have seen the evolution of many Rogue Audio products over time and had
asked Mark O'Brien, designer and owner of Rogue Audio, periodically if there was
going to be a revamp of the now classic Pharaoh. His answer was always, not at
this time. --->

Do You Really Need To Buy A Bugatti?
How expensive our hobby doesn't need to be.
Article
By Roger Skoff As I understand it,
Bugatti's latest-model car costs something like $4,500,000, goes well over 200 miles (320kM) per hour, and costs at least the earlier Veyron model did about $23,000 just for one of its regularly scheduled oil
changes. I might be wrong, though; I haven't done any serious Bugatti shopping lately, and I
don't ever intend to. I did, once have a super exotic car, though a 1953 Siata factory team race car that had been built for that
year's Targa Florio road race. I was just a kid, then, no more than about nineteen years old, and, frankly, although something more practical would certainly have been a far better choice, I
didn't know any better. The car was extremely beautiful, very fast, and VERY prestigious: Everywhere I drove it, it was the center of attention, and I could enjoy the hope that, as its driver, I must be something special,
too. --->

Margules Audio U-280SC 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Vacuum Tube
Amplifier Review Realistic sound with extended frequency extension... plus tube rollers can rejoice too!
Review By Tom Lyle Margules Audio is a high-end
audio company that produces a full line of components. It is headquartered in
Mexico City, Mexico, and although the Margules Audio U-280SC 30th Anniversary
Limited Edition vacuum tube stereo amplifier review you're about to read is
brand new, the company has been in business since the early 1980s. The Margules
family now including third and fourth-generation members has been
involved in audio in one way or another since the early part of the twentieth
century, when Mr. Jacob Margules, a European engineer. He also contributed to
the building of radio stations and electrification in Mexico as they
manufactured wind-up gramophones, followed by tube radios, plus they distributed
industrial parts too. --->

Coherent Audio Trim Tens Floorstanding Loudspeaker
Review Shining a spotlight on the music.
Review By Paul Schumann After
my first year of college, I inherited my Dad's Dynaco ST-70 amp and PAS preamp.
The Jensen drivers in the speakers he built before I was born had fallen apart
and he wanted a simpler system to listen to music. Over the summer I worked at a
sandwich shop and saved my money to buy a new pair of speakers. When I finally
socked away enough dough, I went to the audio salon I had been haunting for
nearly a year. Surprised I was going to actually buy something, I got the royal
treatment. Looking back, I'm amazed at the wide variety of
transducers I listened to that day. I'm not going to drop any names, but a lot
of famous early 1980s speakers were in the shop at that time. --->

Rogue Audio Stereo 100 'Dark' Vacuum Tube Amplifier Review Musical purity and natural ease bring out the very best in your loudspeakers.
Review By Ric Mancuso Rogue Audio's designer Mark O'Brien has been on a tear lately
with updated and new models that are setting the bar higher for the competition.
I recently wrote about the new Rogue Audio Pharaoh II and the Sphinx Model 3 before

flag. Mark is a high-performance car and motorbike enthusiast, along with being
driven no pun intended by his passion for premium audio high-end sound.
I guess you could call him a gearhead. Hey, aren't we all at some level? Funny,
how speedy motorbikes are a thing with other audio designers in the industry. To
name a few, EveAnna Manley of Manley Audio, Sean Casey of Zu Audio, and Mark O'Brien
