Music streamers all deliver the same data, and we're honored to review the new Lindemann Woodnote BRIDGE Hi-Res Audio music streamer. The way a streamer handles noise, grounding, clocking and analogue stability across the system determines how the music is delivered. Lindemann's Woodnote BRIDGE is built around that understanding. It aims to create a stable electrical environment in which the DAC can then do its work cleanly. If the design works as intended, it should make it easy to hear musical benefits. The Woodnote BRIDGE should give a sense of calm and coherence that's noticeable from the first track. That's actually quite a tall order as it's sometimes said it's difficult to distinguish between streamers. That's the context for this review. The focus is on what the Woodnote BRIDGE streamer does right: how it manages incoming noise, how it maintains clock stability and how those choices translate into musical expression. The Lindemann Audio Woodnote BRIDGE needs to deliver consistency along with its ability to preserve the emotional character of recordings without adding unnatural emphasis. This review is written from the perspective of how does it behave? How does it shape phrasing, timing, and emotional connection? How does it illuminate the expressive intent of musicians?
Overview Connectivity covers: Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HDMI eARC, S/PDIF (Coaxial and Optical) inputs, USB for music on memory sticks and on USB CD drives. Outputs are S/PDIF (coaxial and optical) & AES/EBU. The accompanying Lindemann control app is stable, attractive and mature. The device runs cool, boots quickly, and behaves as a mature, well-sorted component. There is an OLED screen to show information such as input selection, volume etc. If your priority is to be able to view what track is playing, you need to do this via the Lindemann app, or whichever app you decide to use.

Technology And Design Intent The decision to design the Woodnote BRIDGE strictly around S/PDIF output rather than USB follows directly from Norbert's core belief that time-domain integrity is the single most important factor in digital audio. He argues that modern music distribution - mostly files stored on servers, streamed over networks - inevitably produces a "frozen" data container that must be turned back into a real-time stream. That conversion, whether via PLLs, FIFOs, or sample rate converters, introduces jitter and RF noise long before the DAC ever sees the signal. In Norbert's view, USB, LAN, and WLAN all share this same structural characteristic: they deliver data whose timing is reconstructed rather than inherent. By contrast, a well-implemented S/PDIF output allows the transport to impose its own stable clock on the outgoing stream, reducing the DAC's need for aggressive clock‑recovery and re-sampling. The Woodnote is built around that principle - minimize upstream timing uncertainty so the DAC more easily and accurately handle the datastream. USB, as Norbert describes, behaves like a generic computer interface: noisy power rails, shared grounds, RF contamination inside the cable, and a protocol that forces the DAC to reconstruct timing from packetised data. The presence of a 5-Volt supply line running alongside the signal conductors is, to him, fundamentally hostile to low-noise clocking. He also questions the need for extreme sample rates, arguing that anything above 192kHz is artificial up-sampling that worsens jitter. The Lindemann Audio Woodnote's S/PDIF-only design is not a limitation but a philosophical stance. Norbert wants a transport that behaves like a clock appliance, not a computer peripheral. By eliminating USB output, this removes the ground noise path, packet-timing reconstruction and the need for complex DAC-side recovery schemes. The Woodnote becomes a very deliberately focused, purpose-built device: a stable, low jitter digital source that hands the DAC a clean, coherent stream rather than a noisy, timing-ambiguous data pipe.

Sound Quality The Woodnote's behaviour starts with how it handles incoming data, which usually arrives with unwelcome partners - common-mode noise, RF energy, and ground contamination from the host. The Woodnote BRIDGE grounding strategy keeps the internal reference rails stable, and its power regulation avoids the subtle modulation that can make some DACs sound forward or etched. The result is a presentation that feels calm and unforced, even when the source data is electrically messy. The Lindemann Audio Woodnote BRIDGE takes the incoming digital audio datastream and rebuilds its timing with extreme precision. It starts by reading the music and its timing signal (FSYNC from I²S), then extracts the true timing instead of relying on the noisy internal clock of a typical streamer. A very slow (that's a good thing) ultra-stable 1 Hz PLL (Phase-Lock Loop) locks onto this timing and cleans it using a MEMS reference clock, producing a new clock that barely moves or wobbles at all. Stable timing is preserved during resampling because the Woodnote only converts sample rates in synchronous power-of-two steps, which avoids the jitter and mathematical "smearing" that can happen with the more typical asynchronous conversion. Finally, the cleaned audio and clock are sent out through a fully isolated, transformer-coupled S/PDIF output powered only by linear regulators, so none of the noise from the main processor (System on a Chip or SoC) can leak into the signal. The consequence of this design is that the DAC receives a digital stream with exceptionally stable micro-timing and almost no contamination from noise or jitter. Music feels more "alive" because the tiny timing variations that shape bass lines, transients, and phrasing are preserved instead of blurred. Instruments align more cleanly in time, imaging becomes more stable and the background becomes quieter and more natural. In systems that reveal timing well, this stability translates directly into clearer transients, more expressive micro-dynamics, and a sense of musical flow that is difficult to achieve with many streamers. The Woodnote doesn't just send bits; it sends clean, disciplined timing, and that's why it sounds different. The takeaway is simple: the Woodnote BRIDGE gets it right – very right. It controls noise at each stage, manages clocking extremely well and maintains excellent grounding discipline. It's a streamer that stays composed, consistent and musical – plus it combines beautifully with DAC PLLs.

8. Low-Level Detail: Intention, Not Information
Open-Baffle Reference And Stand-Mount Listening I spent quite some time switching between the Stand-Mounts and my Open-Baffle speakers. Returning to my Open-Baffle reference immediately clarified what the Woodnote BRIDGE was doing. The stand-mounts had been enjoyable and musically coherent, with a warm, chest-forward balance and a little extra energy in the low-mid region that suited some material. The OBs remove all traces of enclosure and port behavior, the Woodnote's timing, clarity and micro-dynamic expression then became even more apparent. Overall: Stand-Mount Versus Open-Baffle With the stand-mount loudspeakers, the Woodnote's expressive timing feels direct and propulsive. The presentation is intimate, centre-focused, and rhythmically firm, with bass lines having punch and vocals displaying presence. Compared with the Open-Baffles, cabinet artifacts become noticeable until your brain manages to tune them out. The Woodnote keeps everything stable and unforced, letting the stand-mounts deliver a confident, musical performance. Across both listening setups, the Woodnote BRIDGE behaved with complete consistency. It did not impose a signature. It did not add warmth, brightness, or weight. It simply revealed the character of the system downstream — whether that was the warm, chest-forward balance of a ported stand-mounts, or the open, uncoloured immediacy of an OB reference system. This is the defining quality of the Woodnote:

Choosing The Tight S/PDIF Cable The Woodnote doesn't "need" any particular cable - it simply reveals what each one does.
Conclusion What stands out is how quietly confident the presentation is, along with an eerie ease in the way music is delivered. Complex passages remain organized, crescendos rise without strain, and quieter moments settle without losing musical relevance. The Woodnote BRIDGE does not impose a signature; instead, it lets musical expression beguile the listener. The level of expression the Woodnote BRIDGE is capable of providing is difficult to convey. I've explained my views to several people before they hear my system with the Woodnote BRIDGE as the source. They hear what I'm saying about expression but couldn't calibrate the extent of the emotion they were about to experience. I then start to play a number of tracks, invariably mid-first track, they react... "I get it, I now know what you meant". Someone who knows my system well knew, from hearing the first breath of Diana Krall, at the start of California Dreamin' that something special was about to occur. And it did. Lindemann's The Woodnote BRIDGE operates at two levels depending on the associated system. It can benefit every system, but it reveals its full capability with loudspeakers that preserve time-domain integrity. With conventional box speakers, the Woodnote brings clear benefits in refinement: clean transients, a calm noise floor, openness, a sense of expression coupled with natural detail and ambience. These gains are easy to hear and will be appreciated by many looking to elevate their digital front-end. However, the Woodnote takes this up a notch or two with a scarcely credible performance when matched with a suitable system. The way expression is delivered - micro-dynamic shading, breath pressure, phrasing intent and the entire envelope of notes (transient – sustain – decay) - makes performances feel alive rather than reproduced. These qualities become fully audible on systems that maintain low stored energy and coherent timing: often this means speakers that are electrostatics, planar, single-drivers, open-baffles, horns or cardioid speakers. Some box speakers can also work to these levels of performance. Simple crossovers also help. If your system already preserves immediacy, the Woodnote doesn't just refine the sound; it unlocks a very high level of expressive realism. In a world where digital audio often feels homogenized, the Woodnote BRIDGE stands apart as a component that restores the expression. It does not impose a signature. It does not editorialize; it illuminates the system, the recording, and the musicians - not itself. I had the preconception the Woodnote BRIDGE would be an upper-mid-tier streamer, this alone would justify its price. I was wrong. It's absolutely a top-tier streamer which competes with products that are very significantly more expensive. I cannot imagine any system where the Woodnote BRIDGE would not be a very worthy front-end. If timing is how you connect to music, if expression is what moves you, if you listen for the skill in a performance rather than an impressive sound, then the Woodnote BRIDGE deserves not just a place on your shortlist, but a place at the very top of it. The Woodnote BRIDGE is a quintessential streamer.
