Montreal Salon Audio / Montreal Audio Fest 2016 Show Report
Part 1 By Rick Becker
Next table down the hall I found Donald Locke of the Montreal
retailer Plurison explaining the idea behind the Iso
Acoustics speaker stands.
Across the hall the shipping crates announced the contents of
the room behind the wall.
At TAVES last October the Focal
Sopra No. 2 floorstanding speakers sounded exquisite driven by a
Devialet all-in-one component. Here, using Naim
separates, Plurison achieved similar results. Whereas Naim has given up
producing loudspeakers and Focal has given up producing electronics (seldom seen
on this side of the pond), each is now focusing on doing what they do best and
there was a lot of synergy in this rig.
On a table outside the Plurison room were a handful of
turntables, most notable being the Clearaudio Performance DC ($4995), presumably
with a DC motor, that I think is a new model. It runs 33, 45 and 78 and is quite
attractive with a two-tone plinth, massive platter and carbon fiber tonearm.
At another table in the hall was a display board of premium
speaker cables from WireWorld. A close look at the end of one of their speaker
cables reveals the complexity of design and difficulty of construction.
