MY 25 Hi-Fi Malaysia Group In Kuala Lumpur 2015
Audio Gold For Lucky Men: MY 25 Hi-Fi Malaysia Group
A prosperous two day trip to Kuala Lumpur brings an earful of delights worth millions of dollars.

Engineering The Finest Sound
Yoong Hoi Shing shows us how it's done.

Upon walking into Yoong's home, we saw a beautiful selection of vintage audio gear. This includes perhaps the world's very first 'Walkman', per se, using the Edison cylinder(!). His main rig featured a very unique dual stack of Genelec 8050A self-powered monitors on custom stand. Mr. Yoong says there are only three setups like this within the world and color me very impressed! The dual stack of 8050A monitors are augmented with a one-per-channel Genelec 7070A powered subwoofers. My notes say very precise imaging and an enjoyable, enveloping soundscape. His home was custom designed by him with the priority being the music room. Power lines are dedicated and short for optimization. He chooses to design and produce his own cables, as Mr. Yoong is a retired engineer. Furthermore, he employs ceramic cable stands, which are simply high tension wire insulators, which cost a mere 60 cents each. He is a wise enthusiast who knows the benefits of getting one's cables off the floor, yet takes advantage of common sense and very reasonably-priced solutions. Getting back to the music, there is a harmonically complimentary sound to the music; not lean or overly warm. Balanced harmonics that is pleasant to the ear without any of the gooey syrup or strident sounds. During our system audition he kindly let me choose songs from his music server and in some ways I felt a bit guilty, as have been without high quality music system for weeks. It was so very refreshing being able to 'jam' to music. We used a mix of CD and WAV files. Can not stress highly enough how well this system's time and phase were perfectly aligned. Imagining was top notch, of course, and top-to-bottom frequency response was well rendered.
