Revox Has Acquired Horch House Music Company
With reel-to-reel making a strong comeback, manufacturers of new hardware need to ensure their clients have music to enjoy on them. "In the last 15 years, Horch House has developed into the
world's leading company within the analog master tape industry," says their press release. "The brand Horch House, headed by Volker Lange, stands for an uncompromising approach towards quality. Recently, Revox announced the return of the B77, the icon of tape machines, which will be produced as the newly developed B77 MK III. Step by step, Revox plans to offer new analog products. Volker Lange is going to take over the management of the developing analog division within the Revox Group. Furthermore, he is going to become a member of the executive board at Revox."
CEO of Revox Group, Christoph Frey, said "We are delighted to further strengthen our analog branch by taking over Horch House. The many Horch House licenses with record labels will allow us to expand our range of analog products, like master tapes. We have already started to produce the Revox Master Tapes in our plant in Villingen and our plan is to step by step transfer Horch
House's entire production there. Even more I'm happy to have Volker Lange on board as
he's known to be a very knowledgeable person within the analog music world. Volker Lange has already helped to decide on many of the new features on the B77 MK III. We are going to follow the strategy intensively of not only offering products but also the necessary sound carriers. Many new products are in the planning. In the coming years, we would like to follow our
'dual strategy' by further developing our Multiuser System and continuously expanding the analog
division."

AGD Productions SOLO Limited Edition GaN-Power Monoblock Amplifiers And Andante Mk II Preamplifier / DAC / Phonostage / Music Streamer Review
The apex of musical reproduction in ways no other Class D design has yet achieved.
Review By Dr. Michael Bump
As a classically
trained percussionist / composer whose forte gravitates towards modern chamber
music, I naturally seek out and explore the most current of musical ideas –
Those that delve into sonic territory yet undiscovered. Contemporary percussion
recognizes the fundamental responsibility of the percussionist-as-inventor.
Indeed, we percussionists are creatures donning many hats, an amalgam of
scientists, naturalists, engineers, archeologists, et al, compelled to follow
the sonic siren of our artistic goals, unconventional or otherwise, that
ultimately shapes our art. We are musicians in search of a sound, whose
obsession it is to seek the source and its means of actuation (Yes, in the right
hands, everything is a potential musical instrument!).

Wells Audio Innamorata III Stereo Power Amplifier Review
Incredible voicing, seductive soundscape, and high-performance musical pleasures.
Review By Ron Nagle
As an audio manufacturer and owner of Audible Arts,
Jeff Wells is at the very foundation of what drives high-end, high-performance
luxury audio. Need proof? Then read the below review of the Wells Audio
Innamorata III power amplifier to truly grasp the outstanding nature of this
product's design and engineering. Jeff Wells is an old-school entrepreneur who
founded a family business in 2014 with only $2600 of spare parts and a great
idea. There would be no high-quality audio today without small startups and
visionaries who are willing to take great risks. And I say thanks to that group
of audio entrepreneurs whose innovations are the lifeblood of our hobby! Let's
take a look at the new Wells Audio Innamorata power amplifier.

Hegel Music Systems H400 Streamliner Review
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
Review By Paul Schumann
One
of the rites of passage into adulthood for my generation was the purchasing of
an audio system. You saved up enough scratch at some point, went down to the
local fi-fi store, and picked out a system. The heart of this system would be
the receiver. It had everything you needed: a phono preamp, tuner, tape loop,
and power amp. All you needed was a turntable with a pre-mounted cartridge and a
pair of speakers, and you were set. If you had some extra cash, you could pick
up a cassette deck to record the "King Biscuit Flour Hour" on the radio. That
sustained many of us until we were compelled to buy a multi-channel home
entertainment system or go into high-end equipment and demote our receiver to
the garage. Eventually, dust, humidity, and father time would take their toll
and our stalwart would give up the ghost.

Part 4: Capital Audiofest 2024 7th Floor Rooms 736 to 761
Listening to luxurious stereo systems at CAF 2024.
Capital Audiofest 2024 Show Report By Rick Becker
I've commented extensively on Bache Audio speakers
before. They are a boutique manufacturer in Brooklyn with an in-house listening
room. The floorstanding speaker here was their newest model, the Sofia-103 with
a side-firing 10" fiber wood cone woofer to achieve low extension. Note the
twin tweeters in D'Appolito configuration with 6.5" mid-woofers on the front
baffle and the super-tweeter on top. They aim for high efficiency in their
designs and I heard no compression or clipping from the Russian KT tubes in the Alexus
Audio monoblocks. That was the Sofia 101 stand-mounted monitor next to it
and there is a Sofia 102 midsize floorstander in the lineup, too. DS Audio makes optical cartridges with matching phono
stages but the music I heard here was streamed through a Cocktail Audio digital
front end below the turntable.

Warner Music Group 2024 Financial Results
Warner Music Group Corp. (WMG) fourth-quarter and full-year financial results for the periods ended September 30, 2024 have been released, and the numbers are very interesting. According to WMG's report, their income was up by 2.8% (or 2.9% in constant currency). Digital revenue was reduced by 0.2% (or increased 0.2% in constant currency) and streaming revenue increased 1.0% (or 1.3% in constant currency). Recorded Music streaming revenue increased 2.1% (or 2.5% in constant currency). Music streaming was up 5.6% (or 6.0% in constant currency) while Music Publishing streaming income was reduced by 4.2%, though Music Publishing streaming revenue was up 5.2%. Revenue increases in this quarter were driven by growth in Recorded Music licensing, physical, artist services, expanded-rights revenue, and Music Publishing synchronization revenue.
Basic and Diluted earnings per share were $0.08 for both the Class A and Class B shareholders due to the net income attributable to the Company in the quarter of $48 million. As of September 30, 2024, the Company reported a cash balance of $694 million, total debt of $4.014 billion and net debt (defined as total debt, net of deferred financing costs, premiums and discounts, minus cash and equivalents) of $3.320 billion, compared to $3.323 billion at the end of the prior year. Cash provided by operating activities decreased 10% to $304 million from $338 million in the prior-year quarter. The decrease was largely the result of timing of working capital, partially offset by the timing of severance payments related to the
Company's restructuring plans. Capital expenditures decreased to $33 million, from $38 million in the prior-year quarter. Free Cash Flow, as defined below, decreased 10% to $271 million from $300 million in the prior-year quarter. Last week, the
Company's board of directors authorized a new $100 million share repurchase
program.

Part 3: Capital Audiofest 2024 Rooms 702 to 733
Impressive stereo systems on the 7th floor at CAF 2024.
Capital Audiofest 2024 Show Report By Rick Becker
This room was attributed to Hollis Audio Labs, but I
recognize the gentleman from Danville Signal from last year. This is a
B2B room, I think, where other manufacturers come seeking engineering expertise
for their projects. Attending CAF puts them right in the thick of activity. I came
upon a room down the hall that tapped into Danville for their services. This was my first experience of the classic
Audience
1+1 monitor, now in its 5th version ($3900). The excellence was easily confirmed
but the surprise was that it was driven by the Atma-Sphere Class D GaNFET
monoblocks. I've visited Ralph Karsten's room at AXPONA several times and
been underwhelmed by the performance, which I attributed to the monoblocks being
set directly on the carpet. Here, they were placed on an amp stand with
vibration-absorbing footers which seems to have made a significant difference
– or maybe it was just the speakers?

Capital Audiofest 2024 Show Report By Rick Becker
Vinyl Sound, a retailer from a suburb of Buffalo,
NY, had a straightforward rig on a SolidSteel rack. An Accuphase
E-5000 integrated amp ($18,975) was the heart of the system. A HiFi Rose
RS150B Reference network streamer ($4500) handled the digital. An IsoTechV5
Aquarius power conditioner ($3k) was hiding on the bottom shelf and Furutech
cables were used throughout. On top of the Tannoy Stirling iii LZ Limited Edition
speakers ($6250 each/show price $5625) were Tannoy Prestige GR Super Tweeters
($2195 each/show price $1975). Lovely cabinet work on this traditional style. This
was my first time seeing IsoAcoustics footers on a Tannoy speaker. The turntable was a
TransRotor (Germany) with a
separate power supply on the shelf below, but it was not on the room sheet, nor
was the cartridge.

Kronos Discovery Vinyl LP
Turntable Review
Drive-by reviewing at Long Valley.
Rick Becker
Investigates A Treasured Turntable.
It
was supposed to be a nearly five-hour trip but my wife missed a turn on the
shortcut and took the Shooting Brake through an all-terrain parking lot to buy
lunch at Subway. Then there were accidents on I-80 to slow us down.
Nevertheless, Bill Parish was all smiles, as usual, when we pulled into GTT
Audio to get a listen to Louis Desjardins' latest masterpiece, the Kronos
Discovery turntable. Bill had sent me his GTT video newsletter
with a pow-wow after David W. Robinson, Editor in Chief and Senior Writer
Maurice Jeffries of Positive Feedback had spent an afternoon listening to the
new turntable. Emails flew and Louis sent me a copy of Alan Sircom's review in HiFi+
magazine. I emailed Louis and told him I thought it was a very good
review. He replied that he thought it was an Excellent!

Meitner Audio MA3 Integrated
Hi-Res DAC Review
Outstanding performance and value!
Review By Phil Gold
The
industry is converging around integrated digital front ends – something to
access streaming services such as Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify, Internet Radio as well
as your own digital library and some offer a volume control. You may get analog
inputs, maybe even a phono section for turntable fans, while some include a
power amp stage. Today we are looking at a very special sample of this breed. First of all, who or what is Meitner Audio? Meitner Audio is
the junior sibling of the reference class EMM Labs, based in Calgary, Canada.
EMM Labs. It is named after Ed Meitner, as is EMM Labs (Ed's initials are EMM).
For a DAC with variable output, the DV2, EMM Labs carries a list price of
$30,000, and they also offer a streamer, the NS1, which lists for $4500. So that
makes a total of $34,500 for a two box streaming DAC with volume control. What if I told you the MA3 Integrated D/A Converter was the
exact equivalent of these two boxes for a total of $9500. Well, I'd be
lying of course, or at the very least exaggerating. But I wouldn't be that far
off the mark.

Bose Acquires McIntosh Labs And Sonus Faber To Expand Their Portfolio
In a landmark deal that is poised to reshape the high-end audio market, Bose Corporation has announced the acquisition of both McIntosh Labs and Sonus Faber, two highly regarded brands in the premium audio industry. The move is part of Bose's strategic push to diversify and expand its product offerings, blending its innovative technology with the legacy and craftsmanship of two iconic names in
high-end audio / audiophile sound. McIntosh Labs, renowned for its premium
hand-built amplifiers, loudspeakers, and immersive home audio systems, has long been a symbol of elite sound quality and
design. Sonus Faber, based in Italy, is famous for its exquisitely handcrafted loudspeakers that marry luxury with
high-performance. The acquisition is expected to not only bolster Bose's presence in the
high-performance luxury market but also enhance its capabilities in custom audio solutions for both residential and commercial spaces. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but the acquisition is seen as a significant step for Bose as it looks to broaden its portfolio beyond its consumer-focused product lines.
Industry analysts are already speculating on how this acquisition will impact the competitive landscape of premium audio brands. Bose, which has
a solid footing within the mass-market audio space with its noise-canceling headphones and home
/ auto speaker systems, now gains access to McIntosh's time-honored reputation for engineering superior high-fidelity audio equipment and Sonus
Faber's handcrafted Italian design. While McIntosh and Sonus Faber will continue to operate under their own branding, the collaboration with Bose promises to introduce new synergies, particularly in the areas of digital audio processing, wireless connectivity, and product integration. Bose's extensive research and development resources, combined with McIntosh and Sonus Faber's craftsmanship and engineering excellence, are expected to result in innovative new products that appeal to both audiophiles and high-end consumers. For McIntosh and Sonus Faber, the acquisition offers new avenues for growth and expanded global reach, especially in emerging markets where Bose's established presence could prove instrumental. As the audio industry continues to evolve, this bold acquisition by Bose could set the stage for a new era of high-end sound
immersive experiences.

A great way to start the day at an audiophile / high-end audio event.
Capital Audiofest 2024 Show Report By Rick Becker
Making
my way to CAF 2024, I rolled out of Rochester at 2 p.m. and headed South on
Route 15. I crossed the Pennsylvania border and noticed some road kill while I
drove through poor towns that have only marginally changed over the forty-five
years I've traveled this route. It was impossible to imagine a market for
high-end audio gear in these parts. Even as I approached Harrisburg there were
few signs of growth or modernization. Highway signs just west of town warned "Beware of increased deer
activity." No kidding. Stiff carcasses with hooves
in the air validated the warning. I no longer drive like a disciple of Richard
Petty. As the saying now goes, "You have to finish to enjoy the
music." It was a warm evening with a clear dark sky when
I rolled into the front entrance of the Hilton.

The external clocks, which are required to operate the AKM AK4497SVQ, are MCLK, BICK and LRCK in PCM mode. MCLK, BICK and LRCK should be synchronized but the phase of MCLK is not critical. MCLK is used to operate the interpolator, the delta sigma modulator and SCF. There are Manual Setting mode, Auto Setting mode and fs Auto Detection mode for MCLK frequency setting. Soft mute operation is performed
within the digital domain, with analog outputs being fully differential.

Within his editorial, J. Martins says "Wireless audio is truly remarkable. Whenever I use my smartphone to play music on earbuds, in the middle of a busy street or on a plane, and I hear the music, the experience never ceases to amaze me. When
I'm not at home, it's likely I'm streaming from a cellular network service directly to my smartphone, and using Bluetooth to stream from that device to two
"true wireless stereo" earbuds or to headphones. (I previously downloaded my favorite music, but these days with 5G, most consumers just press play and never stop to think about how the
"magic" happens.) In the audio industry, we tend to criticize Bluetooth for being the last link that still forces us to hear music in compressed form, disregarding the fact that the stream was playing from a central repository somewhere on the other side of the continent, or even in another country, and passing through a complex maze of network servers and cellular links until it reaches our devices. Chances are if we are playing the latest hit from Lady Gaga, that the stream is coming from a server close by, but not a chance if I have just selected my favorite obscure track from Killing
Joke."

A Simple Guide To Balanced XLR
Versus Unbalanced RCA Audio Signal Flow
Let's finally
bring it all together in an understandable form.
Article
By Roger Skoff
Recent
conversations with audiophiles and music lovers have brought me to the
surprising realization that, although they may have excellent systems and even a
fair working knowledge of how to put them together, set them up, use them, and
keep them running, a good many audiophiles have little idea of how they work. It's sort of like driving a car: Any licensed driver can do it
– some even with great skill – but how many drivers know how an internal
combustion engine or automatic (let alone manual gearshift) transmission works? Here's a starter about audio. If you like it, let me know.
More may follow.

Music Is Big Business Within The USA
A recent study conducted using data from the USA's Census Bureau, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and private-sector data to determine the music business' direct economic, employment, etc says that $212 billion is at stake. The recent Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) post says that, "Music's impact is most often seen through culture, connection, and the powerful emotions it stirs. But new research from Secretariat Managing Director Robert Stoner and Director Jéssica Dutra describes the significant financial benefits music drives in communities all across America. According to this new report reflecting data provided by independent labels, performing rights organizations, independent venues, music museums and other organizations across the US, the music industry is a powerful driver of US economic prosperity and growth that contributes $212 billion to the GDP (5.7% annually from 2017-2020) and accounts for 2.5 million jobs. The report's detailed state-by-state breakdown provides an even sharper window into how recorded music is an economic engine rippling through the broader ecosystem from venues, festivals, brick-and-mortar stores, digital platforms to artists, songwriters and music schools, among others."
The top six states for each of the relevant measures (earnings, employment, and value added) are: California, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas. California contributes ~$51 billion as music enthusiasts enjoy a variety of live events including Coachella and Troubadour. Within Florida, Latin, Pop and Southern Rock add up to supporting 169,706 jobs and adds $9.3 billion to the USA economy. New York brings in $24.9 billion and 210,878 jobs, while Pennsylvania achieves 114,731 jobs and $6.3 billion. Tennessee's music scene produces a reported 74,289(!) songwriters in Nashville and overall reach $7.5 billion. The big state of Texas boasts 127,993 songwriters and pumps in $26.6 billion into the USA's economy. Also of note is that music industry employment grew 1.9% between 2017 to 2021, compared to overall USA employment growth was stagnant. The RIAA report does state that their "report uses the latest consolidated data available at this scale and covers periods both before and after the onset of COVID in March of
2020."

"To get at least three completely different opinions on something, ask two audiophiles. In every aspect of audio performance,
there's always someone ready and willing to take the contrarian view, and argue it at length.
We've had audio enthusiasts fight over the superiority of tubes over solid-state, LP
versus CD, CD versus SACD, horns versus panels versus conventional box loudspeakers, and so on. There are those for whom the last 60 years of audio have become progressively worse, and there are those who think we are living in an ever-improving Golden Age of
audio. Although they seldom get physically violent, these fights can be longwinded and fractious. Our sister title The Absolute Sound had two people arguing on a forum thread for several years with no conclusion in sight by the time the forum itself was switched off!
That's dedication, mixed with few pinches of insanity. Arguably the most productive of these pitched battles is the
'what's next' discussion in digital audio. Interestingly, it's rarely about 'what's
next' and more about 'whatever happened to...'."

prices the Best Rooms amass, but a prices many more of us can
afford. I highly encourage people to attend shows and seek out high-value and
exceptional performance at price points where they are comfortable. The runner-ups and Best Rooms are linked to the page

was love at first sight when I discovered the new AGD Audio at Rocky Mountain
Audiofest back in 2019. My review came out in the February 2020 issue and it was
awarded a Best of 2020 Blue Note Award. Now, four years later, it still puts a
smile on my face when I turn it on. It's priced at $7850
per pair in a satin finish and $8600 in full polish, a modest price increase
from the $6800 in satin and $7500 in polished when first introduced. Given how
quantitative easing to deal with COVID-19, along with supply chain disruptions
and opportunistic suppliers has led to inflation, this is sadly understandable.
Factoring in the increase in sound quality brought first by the Mk II, and now
the Mk III, well, that's what this review is all about.

The Nagra SN Reel-To-Reel Tape Recorder
A video about the incredibly small Nagra SN that pretty much covers everything.

I have always been a fan of beautiful engineering. That is one of the primary things that drives me to do the things I do, from writing and typewriter repair to photography. I have dived deeply into those last two things in this blog, primarily my work with typewriter
repair. For as long as I can remember, there has always been this undying curiosity to see how things work. To get an inside look, to examine all these carefully created parts and understand their purpose, and to appreciate the mind that conceived
them. A rather long video about the Nagra SNN, one of the smallest reel to reel tape recorders ever made, and of the highest quality.

Toronto Audiofest 2024 Show Report By Rick Becker
Stand-up dinners are
a challenge for a photojournalist on assignment. It's hard to hold a dish,
operate a fork, and take photos at the same time. I was not only hungry but late
to dinner after setting up my computer and falling into the rabbit hole of
e-mails. I arrived in time to grab one of the beef cups
everyone raved about, but then I had to fill up on the seafood cups which
was a true delight for this seafood lover. Deserts provided a sugar high that
enabled me to take photos of the awards ceremony. It also gave me the energy
to dash back to my room for another battery when my camera died. Haven't I
lived this story once before? I had been carrying spare batteries in my
briefcase during the day, but naturally, I did not bring the briefcase to
dinner.
