Toronto Audiofest 2022 Show Report Part 2 Thirst for more on the third floor.

Toronto Audiofest 2022 Show Report Part 2
Thirst for more on the third floor.
Show Report By Rick Becker
First, to finish up a detail from Part 1, Mike Tang can be reached via e-mail at  by people in need of phono cartridge repairs. Mike will be glad to email photos of his previous accomplishments. And a tip of the hat to Vilip Mak of Audio Excellence for putting me in touch with Mike. (We will be getting to the Audio Excellence room much further on in my coverage.) Having completed the fourth floor, I returned to the elevator and dropped down to the third floor to maintain my orientation in the building. Room 325, hosted by Vinyl Sound was just to the left as I exited the elevator bay. Harbeth SHL5plus XD stand-mounted monitors were sounding good with the 20mm dome super tweeter that has transformed the XD series, bringing more presence to the treble range and making Harbeth more competitive in today's market.

GaN Systems OL200DS And CL200M Extend Class D Audio

GaN Systems OL200DS And CL200M Extend Class D Audio
GaN Systems, the global leader in GaN power semiconductors, has extended its lead in Class D GaN-powered Audio with the release of their OL200DS and CL200M Class-D high-performance GaN FET amplifier boards. The new designs are optimized for sound quality, efficiency (no heatsinks), size, and cost—while enabling audio design engineers to create premium audio products more quickly at affordable prices while reducing time to market. The two new high-voltage boost converter reference resigns include a 210-Watt continuous / 300-Watt peak power source and a 300-Watt continuous / 500-Watt peak power source for manufacturers of stand-alone mono, stereo, and multi-channel automotive and marine amplifiers. The complete audio boost converter solutions include wide-range DC supply voltage input from 9VDC to 16VDC operation, 32V output, and are load dump compatible with differential-primary-drive transformer topology.

The OL200DS and CL200M are self-contained 200-Watt-per-channel Class-D amplifier modules designed for manufacturers of powered loudspeakers and stand-alone stereo and multi-channel amplifiers. The GaN Systems OL200DS is designed as two independent half-bridge outputs for both stereo and single-channel applications. The GaN open loop approach provides an ideal switching form for Class D amplifiers with fewer downsides than silicon. These new designs leverage GaN Systems GS61008P GaN power transistors.

Toronto Audiofest 2022 Show Report

Toronto Audiofest 2022 Show Report Part 1 -- Fine sounds on the fourth floor.

Toronto Audiofest 2022 Show Report Part 1
Fine sounds on the fourth floor.
Show Report By Rick Becker
On a Saturday morning better suited to hiking up a mountain in the Adirondacks or enjoying the fall foliage on a bicycle in western New York, I cruised up to the Toronto Audiofest because, well, that's what I also do. And I hadn't been there since the 2019 show, what with Covid and border closures. It was really good to be back again. And at the industry banquet that evening, it was announced that attendance had reached 2500, more than double last year's show, so I was not alone in my priorities. People at the banquet were really happy about the attendance. The prices are in Canadian dollars unless otherwise stated... or unless I've made a mistake, which happens. Speakers are priced per pair. And unlike past show reports, I will refrain from identifying the Best Rooms until the end of the report to avoid awarding too many rooms in this more modestly sized show.

David Chesky's The Great European Songbook

David Chesky's The Great European Songbook
Grammy nominee David Chesky returns with a modern jazz reimagining of classical European pieces within The Great European Songbook music album. Composer/Pianist David Chesky transforms these classical European standards into a modern jazz trio setting accompanied by two of the greatest jazz musicians today. The Great European Songbook features The Audiophile Society's signature Mega-Dimensional Sound, their unique form of 3D audio. This gives the record an unbelievable sense of space and the atmosphere of an intimate jazz club whether listening on speakers or headphones. All Audiophile Society downloads come in a choice of two audio packages: The Hi-Res PCM Package (which includes a 192kHz/24-bit speaker mix, a 96/24 headphone mix, and a DSD speaker mix) or The DSD & 48/24 Package (which includes a DSD speaker mix, a DSD headphone mix, a 48/24 speaker mix, and a 48/24 headphone mix), all in Mega-Dimensional Sound.

"I started my career as a jazz musician," said David Chesky. "Then I spent many years composing symphonic works and incorporating jazz into many of them. Now it gives me great happiness to reverse it – to take pieces of classical music and use them as the basis for playing jazz. It is such a pleasure to play in a trio setting with both Billy Drummond and Peter Washington who were part of my quintet Jazz in the New Harmonic. Moreover, it is great that, like me, they both are audiophiles and care tremendously about how things sound." Special half-price discount for Enjoy the Music.com readers! Bayz Audio Courante 2.0 Loudspeaker Review

Bayz Audio Courante 2.0 Loudspeaker Review
A new and innovative design in speaker technology.
Review By Dr. Matthew Clott
You might have to stand on your head for this review because Zoltán Bay turned the concept of speaker production upside down and inside out when he created the Bay Radial Speaker (BRS) Tweeter. And when you see the absolutely unique and creative Bayz Audio Courante 2.0 speaker design ($60,000), you're not going to be able to figure out how to stand, so just have a seat and enjoy the read. Maybe have the computer or tablet read it to you while you listen to your favorite composition in the background.... Be sure to grab your favorite beverage and have that cute dog (or cat) of yours sit in your lap and snuggle in; this is gonna be good!

Pass Laboratories XP-17 Phono Preamplifier & X250.8 Power Amplifier Review

Pass Labs XP-17 Phono Preamp &
Pass Labs X250.8 Power Amplifier Review
Impressive sound quality that we've come to expect from Pass Labs.
Review By Tom Lyle
For quite some time I've been using a Pass Laboratories power amplifier, phono stage, and headphone amplifier as references in my listening room. There were times I thought that some might think I was a spokesperson for this brand of equipment! I could see how some might get that idea, because not only do I use three Pass Labs components in my system, I also will tell anyone who will listen that I consider Pass Laboratories' high-end audio components the best in their respective price classes. Then again, those who have read my reviews of other brands of audio equipment will be able to tell that I approach each review with an open mind.

Spatial Audio Signal Processing For Binaural Reproduction

Spatial Audio Signal Processing For Binaural Reproduction
Acta Acustica, the Journal of the European Acoustics Association (EAA), reports on original scientific research in acoustics and on engineering applications. Spatial audio has been studied for several decades, but has seen much renewed interest recently due to advances in both software and hardware for capture and playback, and the emergence of applications such as virtual reality and augmented reality. This renewed interest has led to the investment of increasing efforts in developing signal processing algorithms for spatial audio, both for capture and for playback. In particular, due to the popularity of headphones and earphones, many spatial audio signal processing methods have dealt with binaural reproduction based on headphone listening. Among these new developments, processing spatial audio signals recorded in real environments using microphone arrays plays an important role.

Following this emerging activity, this paper aims to provide a scientific review of recent developments and an outlook for future challenges. This review also proposes a generalized framework for describing spatial audio signal processing for the binaural reproduction of recorded sound. This framework helps to understand the collective progress of the research community, and to identify gaps for future research. It is composed of five main blocks, namely: the acoustic scene, recording, processing, reproduction, and perception and evaluation. Read the full research paper here.

Editorial: Wireless And DSP Evolution
Parts Express 2022 Speaker Design Competition
Lundahl Transformers

How to Choose The Right Signal Processing Technique
Making A DC Power Supply With Audible Benefits
Power Transformer Parameters, Selection, And Testing
Improving Wireless Audio Part 1 — The Growing Pains
Updated Smartphone SPL Apps
Voltage Regulator Tubes in Audio Amplifiers
And Much More!

Within his editorial, J. Martins says "The Market Update article about Wireless Audio technologies featured in this issue revisits some of the extraordinary changes that have taken place in that space. But to tell all the stories and detail the technical progress, more than one article is needed. It's particularly impressive how things have evolved in less than 10 years, and also the number of companies and technologies that have been left behind without ever gaining any consumer awareness. The distinctive factors and key features that distinguish winning approaches in wireless audio are not always obvious. Audio quality, the main argument for most Wi-Fi based solutions, explains why the technology remained at the core of the home audio segment."

Make Your Listening Room A Listening Room

Make Your Listening Room A Listening Room
Roger Skoff writes about how to enjoy your music more without spending a lot more money.
Article By Roger Skoff
Many years ago, a wealthy friend asked me for advice on spending the $100,000 he had budgeted for a new stereo system. After going through all of the usual questions with him, like "What kind of music do you like?"; "How loud do you like to play it?"; "How big is your listening room?"; "When you're listening to music, what do you listen for?"; and so on, I told him something like: "If I had a hundred thousand to spend on a system, I'd spend thirty thousand on all of the component..."

We're All In This Together
A bit of retrospective during Enjoy the Music.com's 25th Anniversary.
Editorial By Steven R. Rochlin
Without a doubt the familiar phrase "Hindsight is 2020" almost feels like it originated as a message from a future time traveler, which we have profoundly misunderstood (h/t Steve Hoffman). Looking back during the past 25 years, and ~9000(!) web pages ago, this site was originally launched as a way to easily answer the many questions he was receiving from others online. Back then, as best I recall, there were less than a single handful of audiophile sites online.

...And More!

Within this month's editorial, Alan Sircom says "The opening page to any magazine should start on a positive note, but this month has been hard on the UK audio world, with the loss of three members of the audio business. Many readers might not have heard of Eric Tuncliffe or Cecil 'Ces' Tibbetts, because they worked as reps for Audio Technica and Alphason, and Marantz respectively. Except at audio shows, they probably weren't the people you associate with the brands, but their work was pivotal in making these brands as important as they are in the UK. While my memories of Eric are more distant, I have distinct yet surprisingly vague memories of propping up a bar with Ces and others into the wee small hours, righting wrongs and waking guests!" Aavik Acoustics RIAA R-180 Phono Preamplifier Review

Aavik Acoustics RIAA R-180 Phono Preamplifier Review
Excellent transparency and musicality deliver musical bliss.
Review By Tom Lyle
In July of 2021, I reviewed Aavik Acoustics's I-180 integrated amplifier, D-180 DAC, and S-180 streamer / network player. In the review, I practically raved about the sonic quality of all three components, so it was no surprise that Aavik earned a hard-fought Enjoy the Music.com 2021 Blue Note Award within our September 2021 issue. The three Aavik components bestowed a 2021 Blue Note award are not cheap, but neither are they extravagantly priced at $7200 each. That is certainly reasonable for high-end audio components that I thought were some of the best I've ever heard within and above their price range. Not only that, but these three components took a surprisingly noticeable step up in their sonic performance when used together. I'm willing to admit that their good looks might have initially contributed to me liking them, especially when the three components were stacked on top of each other - an Aavik stack.

LampizatOr Golden Gate 2 DAC Review

LampizatOr Golden Gate 2 DAC Review
An accurate and unfettered music source for my system.
Review By Matthew Clott
Vacuum tubes versus solid-state are the Audiophile's version of red versus white wine. Both are lovely and both have die-hard fans and haters alike. I don't buy into either club completely, and I don't want to start the next Vacuum Tube Versus Solid-State war. I have enjoyed and currently own both tube and solid-state gear, and use both for reviews. That said, years ago I developed an aversion to tubes in my DAC's, partly due to experience and partly due to unsubstantiated personal bias (hey, at least I'm honest!). Tasting LampizatOr's latest release, the Golden Gate 2, was like eating olive's. I have tried them over and over because I want to like them so badly; but I just never have, no matter which I try. My first experience with LampizatOr was with their Big 6 almost a decade ago. I was skeptical of tubes in a DAC but I just wanted to love it.

Caylin C9 Headphone Amplifier
Pro-Ject MaiA S3 Integrated Amplifier
Aurosound Vida MKII Phono Stage
...And Much More!

Within his editorial, Martin Colloms says "More by happenstance than any masterplan, this issue seems to have turned into something of an amplifier special, starting with the outlandish-looking HiFi Rose RA 180 on the front cover. Yes, it may look like the designers have been raiding the odds and ends bin in order to populate the front panel, but as I explain in my review, there is some logic to their thinking: we're told that the fascia is supposed to represent a flow diagram of the path of an audio signal through the amp. What's more, as with the company's range of network audio players, there's some interesting original thinking in play here, from the 'dualling' of the power amplifier stages, indicated by that very unusual gear-train volume control arrangement you'll have spotted on the cover, to the high-frequency filtering this set-up allows." Happy 40th Birthday To The Compact Disc

Happy 40th Birthday To The Compact Disc
First launched in Japan during 1982, the Sony CDP-101 was the world's first commercially released compact disc (CD) player. The system was launched in Japan on October 1, 1982 at a list price of 168,000 yen (~$730). The Japan-only launch was said to be because Philips, Sony's technology partner in the development of the CD format, was unable to meet the original agreed launch date. Sony agreed to delay the launch of the format outside Japan by six months. Philips launched their CD100 during November 1982. Sony and Philips agreement brought about the official worldwide launch in March 1983. Let us all wish a happy 40th birthday to the CD player.

Many Enjoy the Music.com fans have been sharing storied about their joys with the CD format and their favorite CD player system. Let your voice be heard and be part of the discussion on Facebook and Instagram.

Ampsandsound Red October Integrated Amplifier Review

Ampsandsound Red October Int. Amp. Review
Engaging, toe-tapping, fun, and tonally correct.
Review By Sam Rosen
Ampsandsound continues to surprise and delight me. Last year it was with the Rockwell, which showed me what a DHT amplifier built around a less well known tube could do. ampsandsound also rolled out the new Agartha and converted their entire lineup (with the exception of the Rockwell) to novel (9-pin) input tubes. For a small company, Justin Weber (the owner of ampsandsound) is making big changes at a speed rarely seen in high-end audio. Good news for me and everyone else, he had a few more surprises in store and one of them was the Red October. The Red October, is a no-holds-barred 300B single-ended tube amplifier. It is built on his rolled steel chassis with beautiful point-to-point and turret board construction. While the amplifier itself is built on a single chassis, it is a true dual mono design. Each channel has its own separate power supply, and the only shared components are headphone jacks, outputs, and inputs.
