Chesky Records
Three Guitars Contest

Chesky Records Three Guitars Contest

All members of the Enjoy the Music.com™ Mailing List were eligible to win a wonderfully recorded Chesky Records CD!

Chesky Records proudly presents an eclectic array of original compositions and unique interpretations from the archives, featuring your favorite Chesky singers and songwriters, both old and new. Whatever your musical tastes may be, Three Guitars delivers by highlighting some of the finest musicians and recorded using Chesky's audiophile quality technology. Featuring Larry Coryell, Badi Assad, and John Abercrombie, Three Guitars represents an eclectic mix of three original styles and creative personalities that fuse together to make one "unforgettable experience." This line-up portrays an interesting blend of musical backgrounds from jazz to classical to fusion to Brazilian, with each artist contributing their own compositions to the mix. Here Coryell, Assad and Abercrombie are recorded together for the first time with Chesky brilliantly capturing the spontaneous combustion of spirit and creativity.

As one of the pioneers of modern guitar, Larry Coryell (considered "the godfather of fusion," by Al Di Meola), continues his ongoing trip through a musical landscape, developing fresh ideas encompassing a wide array of styles. At the age of four Larry Coryell took an interest in jazz, beginning to learn the guitar by studying records by Tal Farlow, Barney Kessel and Johnny Smith. He furthered his interest and continued his musical development as a teenager by playing in a band led by pianist Mike Mandel before moving to New York to play in Chico Hamilton's band. In the mid through late 1960's Coryell expanded his reputation by playing with the Free Spirits, Gary Burton's combo, and appearing on Herbie Mann's Memphis Underground album. Coryell broke out in the 70's with the formation of The Eleventh House, one of fusion's most influential groups and has since unleashed his guitar sorcery with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie and Charles Mingus to Randy Brecker and Sonny Rollins.

One of the most exciting and innovative guitar players performing today is Brazil's multi-faceted Badi Assad. A virtuoso whose technical ability never overshadows the visceral impact of her playing, Assad, is, quite simply, a wonder to behold. Assad is known for her capacity to combine her original guitar style with an assortment of guitar, body and vocal percussion. Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Badi began studying guitar at the age of fourteen under the tutelage of her father, Jorge, and her brothers Sergio and Odair-the world-renown Duo Assad. Badi has performed in numerous festivals with artists such as Hermeno Pascoal, Milton Nacimento, Pat Metheny, Francoise-Emmanuelle Denis, Mike Stern, Dori Caymmi, the Duo Assad and others. In 1994, she released her first CD with Chesky Records, Solo (JD99), which quickly launched her career worldwide. Her follow-up, Rhythms (JD137), was a tremendous success, garnering a "Best Classical Guitar Album" nod from the readers of Guitar Player, "Best Classical Guitarist" from Acoustic Guitar, and scores of other accolades. Badi has been featured numerous times on NPR, appeared on television, and brought her music to fans at festivals and concerts around the globe.

In the early through mid 1960's John Abercrombie toured with bluesman Johnny Hammond while attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Once relocating to New York in 1969 he participated on collaborations with such drummers as Chico Hamilton and Billy Cobham and joined the Brecker Brothers for Dreams' debut album. Abercrombie received significant and extensive recognition with Cobham on albums such as Crosswinds, Total Eclipse and Shabazz. Since then he has gone on to collaborate on projects with such artists as Jack DeJohnette, Jan Hammer, Dave Holland, and Ralph Towner to name a few. On Three Guitars, his first Chesky appearance, Abercrombie unplugs his electric to make special performance with the acoustic guitar.

Chesky Records' signature 24-bit/96kHz recording technology allows you to enjoy this one of a kind guitar trio with a level of clarity comparable to that of a live performance. Three Guitars was available domestically on July 22, yet you could have won a free copy from Enjoy the Music.com™! Ten (10) lucky winners received a copy of Chesky Records' new CD entitled Three Guitarists. This contest ended July 31, 2003.
