Canada HiFi April / May 2015  In the consumer electronics industry, the beginning of spring is always celebrated by the audio industry at the Montreal Audio Show / Salon Son & Image, hosted annually in Montreal. This past March was the 29th edition of the show, and the second organized by the Chester Group from the UK. George de Sa and I just returned from the show and are preparing a show report that will be posted very soon on www.CANADAHiFi.com. The Montreal show is always a great place to learn about new products, see old friends and make new ones, and this year's show was no different. Our west coast readers should be very happy to learn that the Chester Group is also organizing a brand new audio show in Vancouver (May 8-10), accordingly named the Vancouver Audio Show. For more info about this show, check out their ad on page 34 or visit www.VancouverAudioShow.com. We encourage all of our west coast readers to make it out to the show for a guaranteed good time!

Inside this issue, we start off with the "The Origins of Harder Rock (Part 1)" by Douglas Brown as he explores and suggests some of the best albums from Jimi Hendrix, The Who and The MC5. Until now, most of our articles have focused on components rather than on music itself, so let us know if you'd like to see us publish more articles like this. Part 2 of this article will follow in the next issue. I know I certainly enjoyed Douglas' take on the subject.

Also in this issue, guest contributor Frank Labonte helps us answer the question – is the time right to buy a new AV receiver or pre/pro... or should I wait a little? – on page 19. It is an interesting piece that would surely make me hold out for a little while. I have a feeling we'll be reading a few more articles from Frank this year!

Malcolm Gomes on the other hand takes us on a voyage of the inside of the human ear to explain how we perceive sound, and why some of us are better at hearing musical details than others.

This issue also contains an excellent TV Shopping Guide from Jeremy Phan. What are the most important factors to consider when purchasing a new TV today? Give it a read and find out!

To top it all off, we've also got three reviews of truly excellent audio components in this issue, so be sure to give them a read.

Wishing you a great summer!
