June 2023 Video: Rick Rubin's 60 Minutes Interview
As an New York University college student, Rick Rubin launched Def Jam Recordings some 40 years ago and has been a hitmaker ever since. Within the below video we can enjoy Anderson Cooper interviewing this incredible music producer concerning his very unique approach to creating and experiencing music.
Born Frederick Jay Rubin in March 1963, Rick Rubin is an American record producer and executive who co-founded (with Russell Simmons) Def Jam Recordings. Rick is also the founder of American Recordings and former co-president of Columbia Records. He brought to the forefront hip-hop via recording / promoting bands including the Beastie Boys, Geto Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Run-DMC during Rick's early career. He has also worked with Danzig, Metallica, and Slayer plus the Cult, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Strokes, Weezer, and many more. He also worked alongside Johnny Cash during his later career reboot.
In 2007, MTV called Rick Rubin "the most important producer of the last 20 years" and was named to Time magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People In The World.
His Southern California recording studio, Shangri-La, was originally a ranch with a bungalow. During the 1970s the property and home were converted into a recording studio by Rob Fraboni to the precise specifications of Bob Dylan and The Band. Interviews of The Band are featured within Martin Scorsese's documentary The Last Waltz, which were filmed at Shangri-La.
Also of note is that Rick Rubin and his Shangri-La recording studio were featured in a special four-part documentary series titled Shangri-La, which aired on Showtime in 2019.
