AXPONA 2019 Show Report --
Audio Expo North America
The Marco Serri Design Fiesole two-way speaker of medium sensitivity was finished in a fine deep cosmic blue metal flake finish that would do justice to the finest motorcycle tank. The music was delightful driven by an Angstrom Audiolab amp with beautiful wood sides, large power meters on the façade and horizontally mounted JJ Electric EL34 power tubes inside a nicely laid out interior. Both products are from Italy and imported by Rainbow Audio in Florida.
Also imported by Rainbow Audio from Italy was this outrageously camp speaker system finished in decoupage, the larger box being the subwoofer. At $6800, it is destined for those who take their camp seriously, as it also produced seriously decent music.
Reinhart Goerner (Goerner Audio) teamed up with Danny Labrecque of Luna Cables to present his usual system of Grandinote gear including amplifiers and speaker. A Funk Firm turntable with a London (Decca) cartridge was on top of the Modulum rack that was seemingly seen everywhere at the recent Montreal show. Even the speakers (without their spikes) were on Modulum platforms. Good sound here, as usual, coming from these amplifiers that provide a tube-like signal from their unique solid-state technology. (Room 1406)
Fonica International was a new name to me and they were showing the taller of three models of electrostatic speakers, all of which can be mounted on a wall, as seen with the smallest model, and angled toward the prime listening position. (Room 1405)
Martin Logan was showing their Renaissance speaker ($25,000), also known as the 15A, driven very nicely by a large Luxman amplifier which warmed up the sound, inviting me into the music much more than these speakers have in the past. Good show, here.
Since there was no 13th floor, I'll be back with the rooms on the 12th floor in Part 3. Stay tuned!
