AV Receivers And Your Livingroom

Editorial By Suave Kajko

Canada HiFi June / July 2015  With spring cleaning behind you and the first day of summer just around the corner you might be contemplating a home renovation project or simply rearranging one of your living spaces. Perhaps you plan to tackle the living room, family room or the home theatre. And if so, you might as well consider upgrading the AV system inside the room - I know that I certainly would.

Frank Labonte, who recently began contributing to CANADA HiFi, offers our most-complete AV Receiver Shopping Guide in this issue. AV receivers have become incredibly complex machines and there are many factors to consider when choosing a unit that's best suited to your listening tastes and space. New surround codecs like Dolby Atmos, Aura-3D and DTS-X promise a more immersive audio experience than ever before but in order to take advantage of them you will need to install in-ceiling speakers or upgrade your existing speakers to height-enabled models. And surround codecs are just one of the many decisions you'll have to make when choosing a new AV receiver.

If you're thinking of upgrading your TV to a bigger screen size or one that offers a better picture, you'll want to give our TV Shopping Guide a read (published in the Apr/May 2015 issue, now available on www.CanadaHiFi.com). TV technology has advanced rapidly over the last few years and the picture quality of the latest sets is hard to compare to sets that are just 3-4 years old. Perhaps you're considering upgrading to an OLED TV as I am? Malcolm Gomes fills us in on the latest developments in this category in the "OLED - The Next Revolution in TVs" feature inside this issue. Personally, I've been waiting for 4K OLED TVs to hit the street and they are finally on the way - from the category leader - LG Electronics.

There is no shortage of audio products in the market and when we select products for review, we select them carefully. This issue is also loaded with some of the best-sounding audio products and accessories that we have come across to date so be sure to check them out in the pages that follow.

Last but not least, I'd like to encourage you to sign up for our eNewsletter so that we can share the latest news with you about CANADA HiFi and the TAVES Consumer Electronics Show (you'll find the eNewsletter sign-up link in the right-hand margin on www.CanadaHiFi.com). We've been working relentlessly on TAVES since the beginning of the year and I can promise you that the 2015 edition will blow your socks right off - and we have yet to announce the major show details!

Wishing you a safe and happy summer!
