Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy
Award went to Foo Fighters for the song "All My Life". This lead to
a great performance by America's own Bruce Springsteen who performed "The
Rising" (album review can be seen here
and here). This
was followed by the Song Of The Year "Don't Know Why" written by Jesse
Harris as performed by Norah Jones who performed earlier in the night. Her
album also won the Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical Grammy Award.
Next up came a tribute to the Bee Gees who have achieved unprecedented
success in the music industry. N'Sync gave their salute to the Bee Gees
through a music tribute medley.
Alas, then came Eminem to perform music from his recent album
and movie. This moved on to the very talented Nora Jones winning yet another
Grammy Award, this time for Record Of The Year! Nora is having an amazing
night winning many awards, and well deserved i might add. Nominated for five
Grammy Awards this year, Sheryl Crow performance with Kidd Rock. A good duet,
if a bit unbalanced as Sheryl is a well rounded polished performer while Kidd
rock is takes the typical defiant hard-edged rocker approach.
Best New Artist Grammy Award, the one virtually each and every
new musician hopes to receive, was won by Nora Jones! This is reminiscent of
the landslide Carlos Santana had during a past Grammy Award ceremony. Then the
Mayor of New York was glad to host the Grammy Awards and introduced Neil Portnow,
President of the Recording Academy. He was proclaiming that the music industry
is alive and well, despite reports to the contrary by such organizations as
the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). As a side note, the RIAA
does not represent musical artists; instead they (generally) represent the business
interests of major record labels.
As a tribute to the late Joe Strummer of the Clash, a tribute
"super group" consisting of Little Steven, Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Attractions drummer Pete Thomas and No Doubt's Tony Kanal
began playing the Clash song "London Calling".
The night ended with Nora Jones winning the Album Of The Year
for Come Away With Me. All in all a wonderful evening filled with many
great performances and well-earned praise. As a member of the Recording
Academy, tonight brought me much joy and the proud feeling of being part of a
great organization! As always, in the end what really matters is that you...
Enjoy the Music,
Steven R. Rochlin
