The AXPONA 2023 Chronicles: Part
1
AXISS Audio
It was a pleasure to meet Dr. Roland Gauder from Germany again this year. Note the horizontal lines on the speaker's side.
The aluminum wishbone is a sample of the multiple units required for each speaker. They are stacked, one upon another to create a rigid, resonant-free chassis for the speaker without requiring internal bracing. How Kuhl is that? Lots of machining leads to an expensive speaker, however.
More affordable, yet equally cool, were the clear Lucite cable lifters that were equally contemporary and traditional in style.
The mysterious item in the room (which had no information on the walls) was the YUKI (?) turntable. A warning label not to touch the magnetic bearing was printed in English and an Asian language. The three knobs on the left look like speed adjustments for 33, 45, and 78 rpm, while the lever closer to the motor spindle seems to be for speed selection. The round horizontal knob at the far left is for start/stop. The drive belt fits around two spindles, equalizing the lateral force on the main bearing which seems to be supported by a magnet. There are some connecting rods beneath the plinth between the two drive spindles. Presumably, there is a motor for each spindle. The polished ring on the platter is a record rim clamp and there was a traditional record clamp on the rack as well. It was an interesting design, for sure. Unfortunately, they were streaming music at the time.
